The Vision

With the success of the St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla National Bank Ltd., Sir Edmund Lawrence GCMG OBE CSM JP, conceived the idea that the same breakthrough in banking could be accomplished in the field of insurance. The directors of National Bank began to lay plans to launch the first ever local insurance company in St. Kitts and Nevis. Mr. Fitzroy Jones was asked to assist in arranging the network for reinsurance from his base in London.

Where It All Began

National Caribbean Insurance Company Ltd (NCI) opened its doors for business on October 1st 1973 in a small one room office on Fort Street with a meager capital of $250,000, with Fitzroy Jones as General Manger/Director. NCI was the first locally incorporated insurance company in the Federation and like its parent company, National Bank, had to overcome the skeptics when it commenced operations.

A solid foundation

NCI’s small staff began laying a solid foundation that stood the test of time. In October 1974, one year after the company began operations, the entire Caribbean was struck by a severe earthquake. For the first time policyholders in St. Kitts and Nevis had their claims settled and received payments within a few days.

Expanding our Reach

The Company entered the Anguilla Market in 1979 through a local agency called Malliouhana Cooperative Development Society Ltd. However, it was not until 1983 that the Board of Directors decided it was an opportune time to offer a more efficient service to the community with the development of the Anguilla Branch.

Path to Computerization

As our customer base expanded, tasks such as issuing renewal notices, tracking policy information and statutory reporting came under serious pressure. The integration of computers in our offices not only assisted us with these problems allowed us to respond to the needs of our customers more efficiently. This process started slowly with a few personal computers in the mid-1980’s.

Leading in the Local Market

National Caribbean Insurance quickly emerged as the leading insurer in the Federation and a household name in St. Kitts-Nevis and Anguilla. Our contribution to the financial community became more significant as businesses now depend on National Caribbean Insurance for security and protection from fire, burglary and natural disasters. People are now able to build new homes secure in the fact that their property could be insured from misfortune. Bank loans are easier to get, as insurance policies could be used as security.
